The short answer
Generative AI wins when the world in the picture has to be invented and the schedule is short. A shoot wins when something real has to be in front of the lens and stay recognisable. Most jobs land somewhere in between, and that middle is where hybrid production sits.
When AI is the better route
The location does not exist
Underwater, in space, inside a dream or in a house that was never built. Everything that would otherwise cost a set, a travel day or visual effects is generated at the same price as any other frame.
The deadline is short
Two weeks from briefing to finished commercial, against 10 to 12 weeks for a comparable shoot. When a campaign has to be on air before a season starts, that gap decides it.
Many versions are needed
The same story for TV, online, Instagram and TikTok, in several lengths. Without a shooting day behind them, extra versions cost editing time rather than a new production.
Changes are still expected
Nobody has decided on the ending yet, or legal is still looking at the claim. A change after the shoot means shooting again. A change in a generated film means generating again.
When a shoot is the better route
A real product has to be seen
Food, fabric, surfaces, anything a customer will hold in their hands and compare with the picture. Generated products drift from the original in exactly the details buyers check.
Real people belong in it
Testimonials, employees, an ambassador under contract. A generated face raises questions about personality rights that a casting simply does not raise.
The budget is large and the output is one film
Below roughly 25,000 euros a shoot rarely gets off the ground. Above it, with one hero film and plenty of time, a shoot brings craft that is hard to argue with.
The brand has decided against it
Some clients do not want generated imagery, or their sector makes it awkward. That is a reason, and it does not need a technical discussion.
Side by side
| Generated | Shoot | |
|---|---|---|
| Briefing to delivery | around 2 weeks | 10 to 12 weeks |
| Entry budget | from 25,000 euros | rarely below that |
| Extra versions | editing time | a new production |
| Late changes | generate again | shoot again |
| Real product, real people | limited | the strength |
| Invented worlds | the strength | set and effects |
And both together
Hybrid production is the answer for most briefs: the product, a face or a location is really filmed, everything around it is generated. It keeps what has to be true and invents the rest. How we work with it
